BUPA Great North Run – Susan Partridge GNR Q&A – Don’t forget to enjoy it.
Is there any last minute tips you could give to runners for Saturday?
Make sure you plan ahead. Don't leave any decisions until the morning of the race. Pack your bags, plan your breakfast, look up train times etc. Write it all down. It seems obvious but when you are nervous it's easy to forget things and get stressed.
Do you have a nutritional plan for the pre, during and post race?
I eat my normal breakfast about 3 hours before the race. This would be cereal, toast, fruit juice and coffee. I don't take anything during the race unless it's very hot. After the race I would rehydrate and try to get a snack as soon as possible.
How do you prepare for a half marathon?
At this point all the training is done and there's nothing you can do to get any fitter. Race week is all about getting plenty of rest. Make sure you get plenty of sleep. Reduce your training volume and intensity and try and get off your feet as much as possible at other times. Also, make sure you're getting plenty to eat but don't over do it or you'll feel bloated on the day.
Having run the Great North Run before is there a certain part of the race you are looking forward to?
The finish! It's my favorite part of any race. There are a lot of spectators along the last sections of the course, so the atmosphere is very exciting. It definitely spurs you along just when things are getting difficult.
For runners participating in the Great North Run for the first time, what is your advice?
Don't forget to enjoy it. Remember this has been your focus for weeks. Your family and friends will be very proud of you and you will thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie out on the course with the other runners
Why do you think people should come down to the race and watch/support the runners this weekend?
The Great North Run is one of the best half marathons in the world. It is a wonderful opportunity to be able to watch it live. You can see the worlds best runners compete against each other as well as help support the mass runners who are raising money for charity, many with very emotional and heart warming stories about their journey to the start line. All of the runners need and appreciate crowd support and the roadside atmosphere is very exciting.
