Honolulu Marathon 2014 – “Extreme Weight Loss” cast member finishes marathon

“I can’t believe this. I’m so happy,” Sara Murphy said after completing the Honolulu Marathon on Sunday. The 39-year-old Kentucky woman is one of the cast members on the ABC-TV reality show “Extreme Weight Loss,” and running the 26-2-mile race was her six-month challenge.

The “milestone” challenge originally was a 13.1-mile half-marathon, but Murphy’s training progressed so rapidly, she decided she wanted to do a full marathon, said episode producer Melissa Galvin. Show producers had reservations, but Murphy convinced them that she could do it and wanted to do it. She was accompanied on her run by fitness guru Chris Powell, the show’s host.

Murphy said she ran 18 or 19 miles and then alternately walked and ran a mile for the remainder of the course. “Having Chris with me helped a lot” Murphy said. “He pulled me along.” “It was hot out there,” Murphy said, but despite the high humidity, she never considered dropping out.

Asked if she would run another marathon, she said, “Yeah, but not tomorrow.” One of the first things she did after finishing the race was rehydrating herself and then calling her parents to share her accomplishment. The four-foot-five Murphy weighed 245 pounds when she began the show’s three-month boot camp last June.

At the halfway point, she has lost “a huge amount of weight,” Galvin said, and is well on her way to meeting the show’s goal of losing half her body weight. The episode with Murphy will air sometime next summer, Galvin said. Caution: Sara Murphy runs alongside “Extreme Weight Loss” show host Chris Powell.
