Athletics Australia – News Australia Day honours
Former Athletics Australia Board member Elaine Canty was named as a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia “for significant service to the community through roles with botanic, health, business and sporting organisations, and as a radio broadcaster.”
Former Australian representative sprinter and President of Athletics International Bob Lay (pictured) was similarly honoured “for significant service to sports administration and athletics in Victoria through a range of executive positions, and to the community.”
Fred O’Connor, a distinguished coach and Life Member of Athletics NSW, was awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division “for service to athletics”.
Former President of Pascoe Vale Little Athletics Allan Thomson was also awarded a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division.

For significant service to sports administration and athletics in Victoria through a range of executive positions, and to the community.
General Manager, Sport Australia Hall of Fame, since 2005.

Executive Director, Victorian Olympic Council, 1991-2001.
President and Committee Member, Olympians Club of Victoria, approx. 21 years.
Member, Rotary Club of Berwick, 2011.
Organised a charity dinner that raised significant funds for the Windamere Community Welfare Centre.
Volunteer assistant at the 2000 Olympic Games and 2006 Commonwealth Games.
President and coach of Lyndale Little Athletics, Dandenong Athletics Club and Springvale Athletics Club.
Represented Australia in Track and Field events at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Australia and the 1964 Olympic Games in Japan.

Has held a range of positions including President; Treasurer; and Secretary, New South Wales Masters Athletics, 1978-2008.
