19th VIDOVDAN 10km ROAD RACE, BOSNIA-HERCEGOVINA – 28 JUNE 2015:
There is a unique atmosphere generated when several thousand children, participating in their own races, are able to see world-class male and female athletes run in the title 10km event.
Cosmas Birech imposed a fierce tempo and led by a wide margin from the start. At 5km he was on sub 28-minute schedule, but between 8–9km he slowed drastically, finishing with a time of 28:50. The warm and humid conditions played their part.
In the women's race Kenyans Angela Tanui and Martha Akeno ran together to 5km when Tanui went ahead. Akeno maintained her second place. The crowd were very excited about home athlete Lucia Kimani, returning to this race after two years, who came in third.
A record number of 900 children participated (between the ages of 2 and 6). The baby competition over 10m also had a record number of participants: 51.
All money gathered from race entries for the 2km event went to fund an operation "for little Marija".
