Marathon & Lifestyle Travel Specialists – New York…. the Race that Excites a City – Jungle Marathon Triumph!

We've completed our stay in Singapore, where we measured the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore, and now here we are in the bright lights and buzz that is New York. This week, it's all about the TCS New York City Marathon, the event that started all those years ago with just 127 runners.

You can't help but be excited by this city….. it reverberates with an energy that exists nowhere else and you can't help but be totally intoxicated by it. So let's "Get Our New York On" and enjoy the ride while it lasts!

There's a number of celebrities running NY this year and also a few guys and gals who can run fast. We'll have a look below at who's lining up next Sunday.

New York…. the Race that Excites a City

 

The TCS New York City Marathon is on next Sunday so let's have a look at who is in the field. 
New York native Alicia Keys will join the throng on Sunday in what will be her real marathon debut, having run an 'unofficial' marathon a number of years ago. Ethan Hawke will also be running his first marathon and will be joined by his wife, Ryan. Other well known local identities such as actor Sean Astin, the Giant's Tiki Barber, actress Katrina Bowden from 30 Rock, exceptional tennis player James Blake and previous winner, Olympian and local favourite Meb Keflezighi will also run through the five boroughs on Sunday. 
At the pointy end of the field is defending champion and previous World Record holder Wilson Kipsang. 2014 second and third place getters, Lelisa Desisa, winner of this years' Boston Marathon, and Gebre Gebremariam are also back in 2015, along with cross country and half marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor.
This year will also see another four runners inducted into the NYRR Hall Of Fame:

  • Haile Gebrselassie – four time World Champion & two time Olympic Gold Medallist in the 10,000m
  • Tegla Laroupe – two time NYCM champion (1994 & 1995)
  • Paula Radcliffe – three time champion (2002, 2003 & 2005) and World Record holder
  • Paul Tergat – 2005 champion and the first person to break 2:05

  •  2014 was the year with the most first time participants
  •  the average finishing time in 2014 was 4:34:45
 
 

Jungle Marathon Triumph!

Congratulations goes out to Rebecca Butler (AUS) who came second in the recent Jungle Marathon. Rebecca completed the gruelling 254km over six days, conquering every hurdle that was thrown at her. From 45 degree temperatures in the Amazonian jungle to swimming across rivers in the middle of the night, Rebecca showed extraordinary strength and, dare I say it, out and out guts, to complete the event. Natalie Wallace (AUS), also completed the long distance event, coming fourth in the women's category.
Andres Lledo was also an exceptional 2nd in the men's 254km, beaten by a mere 30 minutes after the six day competition. In other RunFun runner results, Joel Gonzalez finished a credible 15th and Stephen Roberts finished in 19th place.
Some runners weren't as lucky and withdrew from the event…. nothing lost there in what is considered to be one of the toughest races in the world. As one runner reported after having withdrawn "it's a work in progress." Love ya work!
