Eliud Kipchoge and Mare Dibaba make donations to the Berlin Sports Museum – AIMS Marathoneum at the AIMS Gala in Athens – Horst Milde reports

Martha Morales, AIMS Board Member and Race Director of the Tanga-Manga Marathon in Mexico had a brilliant idea. The winners of the 2015 "Best Marathon Runner" Award at the gala in Athens were to bring some mementos from their running careers to donate to the Berlin Sports Museum.

The idea came about just before event on November 6, and the winners got a last minute notice about the request. Theodosis Livitsanos, a staff member in the AIMS office in Athens, took on the task of notifying the selected athletes and other award winners at the AIMS event. The Sports Museum also asked that each item be autographed to clearly identify who made the donation.

Martha Morales' idea was a success.

Eliud Kipchoge and Mare Dibaba, the winners at the AIMS Gala, brought along their current running gear that they wore at their victories.

Eliud Kipchoge presented his running shirt and race number that he wore at the 2015 BERLIN MARATHON. He not only signed the race number, but he almost wrote a novel on it. Unfortunately, his famous Nike inserts were not part of his donation.

Mare Dibaba presented the museum with an adidas bag filled with her running and training gear, as well as her winning outfit from the 2015 World Championships in Beijing.

These are the kind of artefacts the Sports Museum dreams about.

Additional items were collected too: from Ghirmay Ghebreslassie, the 2015 marathon world champion in Beijing; from Frank Shorter, the 1972 Olympic Marathon champion – who received the AIMS Lifetime Award; from the Chevron Houston Marathon, which won the Green Award; and from the Maratón Internacional Lala, which received the ‘AIMS Social Award' for 2015. 

A regular in making donations to the museum, Konstantin Podbelskiy, Race Director of the Siberian Marathon in Russia, who was also at the gala in Athens, contributed race numbers and medals, while Patricia Carcamo Cura from the Mexico City Marathon presented the museum with souvenirs and equipment.

Thanks to the initiative of Martha Morales, this great opportunity at the AIMS Gala was seized to collect important items for the Berlin Sports Museum – MARATHONEUM.
