Heather Duff ran the Mini London Marathon when she was 12 and promised herself that one day she would be back to run the full 26.2 miles of the London Marathon.

Now aged 29, Heather will fulfil that promise on 24 April when she joins 37,000+ runners on the Start Line of the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon dressed as Wonder Woman and raising money for Cancer Research UK.

The Sport Development officer at Edinburgh Leisure was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cervical cancer in April 2014 – only the 19th reported case in the UK.

Heather says: “At the time I was playing National League hockey and had recently completed my first marathon. I lived an exemplary active lifestyle. At 27, I thought I was immune to cancer but I was wrong. I learned first-hand that cancer can affect anyone.”

After a six week programme of aggressive treatment including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and brachytherapy, Heather is now in remission but still suffers the long term side-effects of her treatment.

“It’s changed the way I live my life. Infertility and menopause is difficult to come to terms with. That said, it has taught me the importance of family, friends and making the best of my life.”

Now cancer-free, Heather believes that without the work of charities like Cancer Research UK she would not be here today.

“I owe them my life which is why I am delighted to be running the London Marathon as part of the team. Knowing that they are working towards a cure for all cancers keeps me motivated,” she says.

“I always described cancer as being the marathon I didn’t sign up for so it will be great to complete one that I did.”

She admits crossing the Finish Line will be an incredible milestone on her road to recovery but she will have the support of mum Alma, husband Gordon and best friend James cheering her on from the crowd.

“I am looking forward to the atmosphere of 37,000 runners from all backgrounds, each with their individual reason, working to achieve the same goal. As I cross the Finish Line it will be an emotional celebration of the fact I am a survivor.”
