RUNNING GERMANY: BERLIN – Zane Robertson runs world’s fastest 10km for 2016

Zane Robertson has beaten a top field in a the Great 10km Berlin road race in Berlin on Monday morning, recording 27 min 28 sec and in the process slicing a huge 36 seconds of the New Zealand record and 26 seconds from the Oceania record.

Robertson’s time is the fastest 10km in the world in 2016 and is the fourth fastest ever by a non-African. Abraham Kipyatich from Kenya was the 2016 world leader with a best of 27:40 set last month in Prague.

The 26 year old, originally from Hamilton, bettered the previous national record he shared with Jonathan Wyatt at 28:04, both set in Japan at the Ekiden Relays. The previous Oceania record holder at 27:54 was Australia’s Craig Mottram.

The Ethiopian-based Kiwi led the race by 12 seconds at the half way mark, going through 5km in 13:49, before storming home in the second half of the race in 13:39.

The winning margin over runner-up Awet Habte from Eritrea was 50 seconds, with Kenyan Nicholas Korir a further 9 seconds back.

Robertson finished 12th in the 10,000m track race at the Rio Olympics, in 27:33.67, lowering Dick Quax’s national track record by over 8 seconds.

The race record for the Berlin race is 27:11, held by Kenyan Leonard Komon who also holds the world record at 26:44 set in 2010.
