Jo Zakrzewski secured a fantastic bronze at yesterday’s IAU 100km World Championships in Los Alcazares, Spain in a time of 7:41:47 to maintain her record of winning a medal each time she has competed over the distance.

Over difficult terrain the Durham athlete – competing as the lone representative for Great Britain at her fourth 100km world championships – showed a great deal of both mettle and experience to navigate the tricky conditions of a route which consisted of ten 10km laps on Spain’s south-eastern coastal town.

After leading the opening 15km, last year’s European bronze medallist at the combined 100km championships slowed slightly, a move which ultimately ensured that the 40-year-old could see the race through strongly whilst contending for yet another medal to add to her growing collection.

In a race which was won by Kirstin Bull of Australian in 7:34:25, Zakrzewski’s clocking over the distance was another show of great consistency following efforts of 7:41:06 and 7:41:55 over 100km in 2011 and 2014 respectively.
