Olympians shine at 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships
EUGENE, Oregon — Two Rio Olympians turned in impressive performances on the first day of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Historic Hayward Field Wednesday, opening four days of action in Eugene.
Sprinter Christian Coleman (Atlanta, Georgia) torched the track in the men's 100m semifinals, shattering the collegiate record to win his semi in 9.82, the fourth-fastest performance in USATF history and equal to ninth on the all-time world list. Coleman eclipsed the previous collegiate record of FSU's Ngonidzashe Makusha in 2011.
The 2016 Olympic Trials champion in the men's hammer throw, Rudy Winkler (Sand Lake, New York) won his first NCAA title Wednesday after a runner-up finish in 2016. Winkler utilized his third throw of 74.12m/243-2 to capture Cornell's fourth individual national title. Winkler earned his third First Team All-America honor in the same venue where he made the Olympic Team a year ago.
