FLASH: Sensation in New York City: Shalane Flanagan (USA) triumphed at the New York Marathon 2017
FLASH: An US American surprisingly won the New York City Marathon: Shalane Flanagan stopped the winning streak of Mary Keitany and won clearly in 2:26:53 hours ahead of the Kenyan, who finished in 2:27:54.
It's the American's first victory in the New York Marathon since 1977. At that time, Miki Gorman won in 2:43:10, but the international women's long-distance run in the 1970s was far from what it is today. For the 36-year-old Shalane Flanagan, who took sixth place at the 2016 Olympic Marathon, it was the biggest win of her career.
Keitany, who won the London Marathon in the African record time of 2:17:01 in the spring and wanted to win in New York for the fourth time in a row, was apparently not at his best on Sunday. The big favorite saved but still second place in the finish before Mamitu Daska (Ethiopia/2:28:08).
It was not the day of the defending champion at the 47th New York Marathon: last year's winner Ghirmay Ghebreslassie (Eritrea) ran for a long time in the lead group, but then gave up almost five kilometers from the finish.
In good weather conditions, 24-year-old Geoffrey Kamworor celebrated his first marathon win after several attempts. The reigning half-marathon and cross-country world champion from Kenya won the race in 2:10:53 just ahead of compatriot Wilson Kipsang. The former world record holder had done well for a few seconds in the last kilometer, but could not quite reach his compatriot and finished second in 2:10:56, just three seconds behind.
Third place went to Lelisa Desisa (Ethiopia) in 2:11:32.
More than 50,000 runners participated in the marathon spectacle with start on the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and finish in Central Park.
