Äthiopier Yomif Kejelcha und Genzebe Dibaba gewinnen bei Hallen-WM über 3.000 m

 Äthiopische Siege gab es bei den Hallen-Weltmeisterschaften der Leichtathletik im US-amerikanischen Portland über die 3.000-m-Strecke. In dem einzigen Langstrecken-Wettbewerb dieser Titelkämpfe setzten sich der erst 18-jährige Yomif Kejelcha und die große Favoritin Genzebe Dibaba durch.

Yomif Kejelcha, der bei den Freiluft-Weltmeisterschaften im vergangenen Sommer bereits Vierter über 5.000 m war, übernahm im Finale 400 Meter vor dem Ziel die Spitze und ließ keinen Konkurrenten mehr vorbei.

Als der Kenianer Augustine Choge und der US-Amerikaner Ryan Hill ausgangs der letzten Kurve 50 Meter vor dem Ziel attackierten, konnte der Äthiopier gegenhalten. Kejelcha gewann das Rennen in 7:57,21 Minuten vor Hill (7:57,39) und Choge (7:57,43). Als Vierter folgte der Marokkaner Abdalaati Iguider in 7:58,04 Minuten, Fünfter wurde der kenianische Titelverteidiger Caleb Ndiku (7:58,81).

Im Rennen der Frauen war erwartungsgemäß keine Läuferin imstande der mehrfachen Mittel- und Langstrecken-Weltrekordlerin Genzebe Dibaba Paroli zu bieten.

Als die Äthiopierin nach 1.200 Metern im Finale das Tempo deutlich anzog, lief sie fortan alleine an der Spitze. Kurzzeitig versuchte die Britin Stephanie Twell ihr zu folgen, doch am Ende wurde ihr Mut nur mit Rang sechs belohnt. Die vierfache Hallen-Weltmeisterin über diese Strecke, Meseret Defar (Äthiopien), konzentrierte sich stattdessen offenbar auf die Silbermedaille.

Während Dibaba in 8:47,43 Minuten souverän ihren Titel verteidigte, wurde Defar mit 8:54,26 Zweite vor Shannon Rowbury (USA/8:55,55). Auf Rang vier lief die Holländerin Maureen Koster in 8:56,44. Dibaba kündigte nach ihrem Sieg an: „Ich werde meine Freiluft-Saison in Eugene Ende Mai beginnen und will dort versuchen, den 5.000-m-Weltrekord zu brechen.“

Im 1.500-m-Finale der Männer blieben die Afrikaner überraschend ohne Medaille.

Hier gewann Matthew Centrowitz (USA) in 3:44,22 Minuten vor Jakub Holusa (Tschechische Republik/3:44,30) und Nicholas Willis (Neuseeland/3:44,37). Bei den Frauen setzte sich über diese Distanz die aus Äthiopien stammende Holländerin Sifan Hassan mit 4:04,96 Minuten vor ihren früheren äthiopischen Landsfrauen Dawit Seyaum (4:05,30) und Gudaf Tsegay (4:05,71) durch.

Einen US-amerikanischen Sieg gab es auch im 800-m-Finale der Männer.

Hier gewann Boris Berian in 1:45,83 Minuten vor Antoine Gakeme (Burundi/1:46,65) und Erik Sowinski (USA/1:47,22). 

Weltmeisterin über 800 m der Frauen wurde Francine Niyonsaba (Burundi) in 2:00,01 Minuten vor Ajee Wilson (USA/2:00,27) und Margaret Wambui (Kenia/2:00,44).

Die einzige deutsche Läuferin, die in Portland am Start war, Christina Hering (LG Stadtwerke München), konnte sich erwartungsgemäß nicht für das Finale über 800 m qualifizieren. Sie wurde in ihrem Vorlauf Dritte mit 2:05,39 Minuten und hatte dadurch keine Chance auf ein Weiterkommen.
