About the Osaka Marathon and Welcome to the 23. AIMS World Congress Osaka 23–25 February 2023

By GRR 0

The Osaka Marathon started in 2011 with over 30,000 participants and is one of the largest city marathon events in Japan. To date, the race has provided the excitement of running through Midosuji, the main street of Osaka and completing a full marathon to more than 300,000 runners.

In Japanese, the word “Omotenashi” means “hospitality” and the people of “Naniwa” (Osaka) are some of the most hospitable and warmhearted in Japan with a crowd of more than 1.3 million people gathering along the road to enthusiastically cheer on the runners.

Another feature of the race are the many water stations and aid stations set up all along the course including the “Maido Aid Station” that awaits runners during the latter half of the race. This aid station symbolizes the city of “kuidaore” (“eat till you drop”) and offers many Osaka specialties and confectionaries from the stores in the local shopping district.

On the day before the race, a “Happy Morning Run” and a “Fun Run” for parents and children also takes place right near the Osaka Castle for overseas participants. The Osaka Marathon is one of the biggest annual events for the Japanese runners, participants coming from overseas, and the local people of Osaka.

The Osaka Marathon has implemented its own charity program since the start of the race in 2011. The race is the largest charity marathon in Japan with over 30,000 runners participating in this charity.

In Japan, holding a race in the middle of a major city was believed to be extremely difficult. However, in 2019 the Osaka Marathon was able to achieve what is referred to as a “Central Finish”, with a finish line located right in the center of the city. As a result, the race was reborn into an even more attractive event allowing participants to run through the center of Osaka and across many of the city’s famous historical and tourist sites. This race course is also certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

In February 2022, the Osaka Marathon will be integrated with the Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon, the oldest marathon race in Japan. The Lake Biwa Mainichi Marathon is one of Japan’s flagship races and holds a Gold Label from the WA (World Athletics Federation) and as a selection race for Japan’s national team, has produced many of the country’s top runners. The integration of these two marathons is expected to enable the Osaka Marathon to become one of the world’s top marathons.

By combining two races that have garnered attention from around the world, the Osaka Marathon will have the competitiveness of an elite marathon with the world’s top runners, and at the same time, give amateur runners the opportunity and satisfaction of achieving their personal goals as well.

As the Osaka Marathon strives to evolve into a world class race, it looks to provide an unforgettable experience for everyone.

We would like to welcome you to Osaka to come and experience this very special race firsthand.

Welcome to the 2023 World Congress Osaka

I would like to extend my sincerest welcome to the members of AIMS and all those participating in the World Congress of AIMS in Osaka.

Since the dawn of history, Osaka has developed as a major city and a region where manufacturing and commerce flourished. At the end of the 16th century, it was the center of Japanese politics and an important logistical hub for the country.

With a rich and diverse food culture, Osaka, is also known as the city of “kuidaore” (which literally means “eat till you drop”) offering a wide variety of delicious food that can be enjoyed by all who visit.

The Osaka Kansai Expo with the theme of “Designing Future Society for Our Lives” is scheduled to be held in Osaka in 2025. This historical city is also the venue for the Osaka Marathon, held by the Osaka Prefecture, Osaka City and the Osaka Association of All Athletics since 2011.

With over 30,000 runners including participants from overseas and more than 1 million spectators gathered along the road, the Osaka Marathon which takes place around Osaka’s major tourist attractions, has grown and developed into a huge event for the city and its people.

I would also like to take this opportunity to tell you a little bit about the history of “running” in Japan.

The first group of “runners” is a group of samurai called the “Ninja” (also known as “Shinobi” or “Onmitsu”). It is said that these Ninjas called “Idaten” had special “running” abilities and could run 200 km a day. The Ninja continued to develop these skills and abilities from the feudal period of Japan (late 15th century), and later evolved into separate schools of Ninjutsu including the Iga-ryu school (developed in the Iga region of Mie Prefecture) and the Koga-ryu school (developed in the Koka region of Shiga Prefecture). These Ninja were said to be involved in protecting their feudal lords as well as collecting intelligence information.

The other group of “runners” were the couriers from the ancient Japanese postal system called “Hikyaku” (which literally translates to “flying legs”). During the Edo period, a public postal system called “Tsugi-hikyaku” was set up as a mean to transport letters. Couriers were stationed at post towns/stations and were tasked with running between these post towns to deliver letters and important documents in a relay system.

Unlike today’s roads, they had to cross unpaved mountains and valleys and it was said that these couriers practiced a special efficient running technique where the right hand and right foot and subsequently the left hand and left foot moved forward in unison. These couriers were said to have been able to deliver letters between Osaka and Tokyo within 3 days.

This is the historical background from which the long-distance running relay called “Ekiden” was established as popular sport in modern day Japan.

I hope that you will be able to experience Osaka which is filled with history and tradition and has grown diversely as a city. I also hope that you will have the chance to interact with the friendly people of Osaka and enjoy the “Osaka Marathon” to your heart’s content.
