1972 Olympian and former world record holder Brian Oldfield dies at 71

ELGIN, Illinois — 1972 Olympic shot put finalist Brian Oldfield passed away Sunday at the age of 71. A cult hero of the sport and a legend in the throwing world, Oldfield made the spin technique popular in both the shot put and discus throw.

Oldfield was the first man to throw over 72 feet and continued to surpass the mark, becoming the first man to throw, 73, 74 and 75 feet. His best throw (75′ in May 1975) still ranks him fourth in the world all-time in the event.

Of the six USATF Olympians at the Rio Olympic Games, four employed the spin technique, including Olympic champion Ryan Crouser and Olympic silver medalist and 2015 World Championships gold medalist Joe Kovacs.

For more on Brian’s legacy, see his obituary from the Daily News Journal.
