Run Britain – News – Paula staying positive
Paula Radcliffe was disappointed to finish 3rd in the BUPA London 10,000 on Monday but, let's face it, she hasn't raced for 18 months and many of us know that there is a big difference between training and racing. We can put in some really good training sessions and even impress ourselves with a time trial or two but standing on the start line of a race is entirely different.
When you set off out of the door for a fast, hard run the only thing you need to think about is the clock. When Paula sets off clipping along at 5 minute mile pace in a race she is surely thinking not only about her competitors but the spectators, sponsors and media. No pressure then! She knows she was not at her best on Monday, but this race will have been part of her programme that she wants to get on with.
She had to start somewhere after wrestling with injuries and niggles and at the end of the day she put in a performance that some current international male athletes have yet to better in 2011. Most would argue it takes four or five races to hit your peak within a competition period both under and over distance.
She has explained that she has a torn disc in her back and so will now concentrate on getting it healed and she will stay away from the shorter distances for the time being.
The marathon in 2012 is still her goal so let's be excited about the future and the performances she has yet to entertain us all with.
