Run Britain – News – London 2012 countdown begins with hot-air balloon orchestra

Music drifted across London's skies from seven hot-air balloons on Monday morning to give residents a melodic wake-up call and celebrate a year to go until the games begin.

The official 12-month countdown does not get under way until Wednesday but the balloons have been flying the past two mornings to ensure nobody misses the milestone.

They took off in quick succession before rising to 152m (500ft) and floating across the capital.

The project is the work of artist Luke Jerram's Sky Orchestra and features a musical score created by Bafta-winning composer Dan Jones.

But, rather than the balloons playing the entire piece, Mr Jerram has programmed each one to broadcast a separate element of the score.
