The World Masters Track and Field Championships, that also includes a cross country race has attracted several famous faces from the Log Angeles Olympics who are all now over 45. The event also takes place in California, in Sacramento about 400 miles north of Los Angeles.
Zola Pieterse nee Budd will represent South Africa in the 5000m and the cross country event. It was 1984 when Budd came to our shores before representing Great Britain in the Los Angeles Olympics.
She is probably the most famous barefoot runner but now, aged 45 she races occasionally and she does wear shoes!
She ran the London Marathon in 2003 and has done 18:34:40 for the 5000m this year which would give her a runbritain handicap score of around 6.0!
Other famous names are Al Joyner who won the triple jump in Los Angeles in 1984, Ed Burke, the hammer thrower, who carried the USA flag during the opening ceremony in 1984 and Willie Banks who represented the USA in 1980, 1984 and 1988 in the triple jump.
Other older Olympians that will be at the games are Karin Illgen, who threw the discus in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and Hans Lagerqvist, who won bronze in the pole vault in the 1960 Olympics in Rome.
