Summer Sizzles in the City
It's better to be safe than sorry when the weather's as hot and humid as July in NYC. The best quick tips: Cover your head. Plan water stops or carry water and sports drinks on long runs.
Cool yourself, inside and out, with cold drinks, frozen snacks (yes, put them in the freezer), and post-run ice baths. Watch for our combined summer/fall issue of New York Runner, coming to you in August, for more tricks to avoid crumbling in the summer heat, plus vacation-friendly running routes and a behind-the-scenes look at one of our biggest races.
Calling Queens Residents to Volunteer
You know the difference between a well-staffed race and one lacking amenities, directional aids, and helpful volunteers. You also know that NYRR doesn't put up with the latter.
Help your fellow runners by volunteering in Queens at the NYRR Sprint Tri on July 23 or the Queens Half on July 30. Sign up now to earn 9+1 credit or simply street cred. Read more about our volunteer program.
Register Early to Race
There's no denying it: We're a city that loves to run! It's no surprise that our July and August races are filling fast. If you're looking for a 5K in NYC, register now for the Percy E Sutton Harlem 5K, which has a Family Health Walk component, on August 27.
If you're ready for 13.1-or will be by the end of August-sign up now for our Bronx Half on the 28th. If your calendar is clearer come September, take on the Fitness Mind, Body + Spirit Games on September 17.
Do You Follow the 10-Percent Rule?
The 10-Percent Rule, tried and true for some runners, has always had its dissenters. Scientists and runners speak up in this recent Times article by Gina Kolata.
Check out this classic Runner's World article or ABOUT.com's description of the rule. Decide where you stand on the 10-Percent Rule, and join our discussion on Facebook. Tell us whether your experience has proven this rule to be brilliant or bogus.
