The revised Charter on Women`s Rights in Sport was recently presented at the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium.

The document is the culmination of the Olympia: Equal opportunities via and within Sport project, which aims to strengthen women´s involvement in the practice and administration of sport. It is led by the Unione Italiana Sport Per Tutti (UISP), in partnership with the Vienna Institute for International Dialogue, Austria, the Ligue Internationale Contre le Racisme et l’Antisemitisme, France, the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) and the Department of Sport`s Sciences of Copenhagen University, Denmark. This charter renews the one adopted by the European Parliament in 1987.

"Compared to the first version the actual charter keeps more attention to multicultural issues, and in general to all kinds of cultural and religious discriminations. It also mentions disability, and there is a specific chapter on sexual orientation.

For the first time it faces the issue of the relationship between women and the organised fan world" explained Daniela Conti, coordinator of the Olympia project.

The charter is composed of five thematic chapters:

  • sport practice;
  • leadership;
  • education;
  • sports women and media; and
  • women as fans.
