INDIANAPOLIS – Chaunte Howard has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after winning the women's high jump Sunday at the Rieti Grand Prix in Italy.
The 2005 World Outdoor silver medalist, Howard won with a clearance of 2.00 meters/6 feet 6.75 inches, defeating Yelena Slesarenko (RUS), the #2 world-ranked jumper of 2007. It is Howard's best performance since giving birth to her daughter, Jasmine, on July 30, 2007.
Matt Tegenkamp got this week started off right Tuesday evening with his win in the men's 3,000 meters in Zagreb, Croatia. The American record-holder over 2 miles, Tegenkamp kicked past Kenyans Vincent Kiprop and Mike Kigen to claim victory in the 3,000m, crossing the line in 7:40.90.
