European Athletics (EAA) – News – Germany’s Storl sends the shot out to European U23 best in Cuxhaven

German shot putter David Storl made up for falling short at last month’s European Athletics U23 Championships when he set a personal best of 21.05m at the Weltklasse hinterm Deich meeting in Cuxhaven, a European Athletics Outdoor Classic Meeting, on Tuesday.

Storl went to the Czech city of Ostrava three weeks ago with the specific intention of improving on his personal best of 21.03m which he had produced in Göteborg in June but had to settle for a gold-medal winning distance of 20.45m.

However, the 2011 German champion made no mistake on home soil and produced the best ever mark by a European U23 putter, subject to record ratification as Storl’s Swedish mark was not submitted for official recognition, with the European U23 record still remaining as the 20.94m achieved by Croatia’s Edis Elkasevic in 2005.

The 2006 European Athletics Championships gold medallist Ralf Bartels was a distant second with 20.11.

Other leading marks at the last European Athletics Outdoor Permit meeting before the World Championships, which start on 27 August, included a high jump win by Viktor Shapoval, with the Ukrainian clearing 2.22m.

Germany’s Soren Ludolph triumphed in tactical men’s 800m in 1:49.35 while Turkey’s 2011 European Athletics Indoor Championships 1500m silver medallist Kemal Koyuncu won over his specialist distance in 3:46.41.

Ireland’s Fionnuala Britton took the women’s 3000m steeplechase in 9:51.66.
