European Athletics (EAA) – News – Farah claims silver in 10000m at IAAF World Championships

Mo Farah claimed the first medal for Great Britain at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu Stadium on Sunday with a stunning silver-medal performance in the men’s 10000m final.

It was Farah’s first medal on the world stage.

Ibrahim Jeilan won gold in 27:19.31 to Farah's 27:14.07, with Jeilan's Ethiopian teammate Imane Merga claiming bronze in 27:19.14.

“I knew all along in major championships that it’s going to be tougher. It’s not always the favourite or someone who runs the faster times that wins,” said Farah, the 5000m and 10000m European champion.

“Bekele has dominated for so many years so it’s nice to see another person win.

“I’m going to speak to (coach) Alberto Salazar and decide on whether to run the 5000m, I’ve got a couple of blisters and also it’s a decision we’ll take together over the next few days.”

It was good day for Europe on Day 2 of the championships.

In the men's 20Km walk, Russia's Valeriy Borchin became the third walker to defend the title at this event, winning in 1:19.56.

Vladimir Kanaykin, meanwhile, became the first world youth champion (at the 10000m walk) to win a medal in the World Championships, taking silver in 1:20.27.

German Nadine Muller claimed silver in the women's discus on Sunday behind China's Yanfeng Li.

Christophe Lemaitre of France finished fourth in the men's 100m following Usain Bolt's shock disqualification for a false start.
