European Athletics (EAA) – News – European marathon champion Röthlin confirms another trip to New York
The 2010 European Athletics Championships marathon gold medallist Viktor Röthlin will miss the forthcoming World Championships but has, instead, confirmed he will run at the ING New York City Marathon on 6 November.
"The New York City Marathon is run like a championship. It's about the place and not the time. I want to prepare for London (the 2012 Olympic Games) and run another race with a championship character,” said Röthlin, commenting on his website www.viktor-roethlin.ch
Röthlin, 36, will be looking to do better in the Big Apple than in 2010 when he failed to finish after a problem with his right knee.
This year, his only marathon so far has been the Virgin London Marathon in April, where he clocked 2:12.44 and finished in 11th place.
However, he is a proven performer at the top level, winning the silver medal at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Göteborg, Sweden, and a bronze medal at the 2007 World Championships before he struck gold in Barcelona.
He has been training recently at Seiser Alm in the South Tyrol and will now spend four weeks at altitude at Muottas Muragl, which is situated close to St Moritz at 2453m, before his next race on 17 September in the local Greifenseelauf event.
"I have especially good memories of the Greifenseelauf race. In 2005, I won it and only a few weeks later I ran in New York and finished seventh,” added Röthlin.
