Derek Nakluski is having a good year. On March 27 the resident of Kitchener was the first Canadian to win the 30k race in 15 years with a time of 1:37:15 – not a course record (1:32:22), but a half-minute ahead of the second place winner.

With a long-distance win under his belt, it gives 28-year-old Nakluski confidence to tackle his first marathon.

On March 28 he is quoted in The Long Run on his strategy leading to Ottawa: "So leading up to Ottawa I needed to put in some solid training and races to get me ready to run the Marathon. Around the Bay 30k was a perfect race it would be 9k longer thann I've ever raced before, but would be able to give me a good indication of how training is progressing and a true test of my endurance."

Fresh faces in the 2011 Ottawa Marathon will bring plenty of excitement – and potential upsets. Derek Makluski will be a fresh face to watch.

The full list of elite runners competing at the Ottawa Race Weekend will be released in mid-May.
