On one of the busiest road racing days in the year a total of 13 AIMS events on 28 September are concentrated in Europe and North America with the 35th edition of the real,- Berlin Marathon leading the way. The field is headed by Haile Gebrselassie – who set the world record of 2:04:26 in this event last year.
Elsewhere the Lake Garda Marathon is run along the shores of the scenic Italian lake while the 4th edition of the Geneva Marathon is held in a comparable setting in Switzerland. The Marathon Expo Zaragoza takes place in north east Spain.
To match the four marathons there are four half marathons, including the 47th edition of the venerable Route du Vin Half Marathon in Luxembourg. In Italy the Maratonina di Udine gets back to its normal schedule after hosting the World Half Marathon Championships last year and the Turin Half Marathon takes place. The 9th edition of the RTP Half Marathon of Portugal is also run, across the Vasco da Gama Bridge in Lisbon. The oldest race of the weekend is the Fortis Singelloop Utrecht 10km, run alongside the canals of the Dutch town for the 58th time.
Over in North America water continues to be the theme of the day, with the Marathon by the Sea being run in St John, New Brunswick and the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon further west into Canada. Below the 49th parallel the Lake Tahoe Marathon brings a week of running events there to a close, while the 10km Internacional Costa Rica is held in the country's capital city, San Jose.
