Calgary, Alta. – The 2011 Canadian Track and Field Championships kicked off today in Calgary, Alta. Over 600 athletes will converge at Foothills Athletics Park between now and Saturday to compete for the title of Canadian Champion.

Two Canadian records were bettered in Calgary today; among them include Sarnia, Ont.'s Robert Hughes (Sarnia Athletics) and London, Ont.'s Kevin Strybosch (London Western). Hughes broke his own national javelin mark throwing 16.04 metres in the F33 para-athletics classification. Strybosch set a new F37 discus mark of 38.80 metres; both men finished first in their events. 

In the 10000-metres Reid Coolsaet (Speed River) of Hamilton, Ont. and Bevin Kennelly (Excel Athletica) of Quesnel, B.C. were named the 2011 Canadian Champions. Reid took the men's crown in 31:36.38 while Bevin secured the women's in 36:40.42.

Closing the first day of the Heptathlon, Jessica Zelinka of London, Ont. (unattached) sits in 1st place with 3735 points; Jessica won the 100m hurdles, shot put and 200-metres today while placing third in the high jump. In second is Coquitlam, B.C.'s (Valley Royals) Ruky Abdulai with 3527 points and in third is Abbotsford B.C.'s (Valley Royals) Natasha Miller with 3341 points.

In the Decathlon, London Ont.'s Damian Warner (unattached) leads after day 1 with 4295 points; Damian won the 100m, long jump, high jump and 400m events. Saskatoon Sask.'s Chris Crossley (Saskatoon TF Club) is in second with 3963 points and Ottawa, Ont.'s Mark Chenery (Ottawa Lions) is in third with 3857 points.
