A new breed of 83 up and coming athletes has today been announced as the 2011 Under 17 Development Squad.

The first step in Athletics Australia’s National Development Pathway, the Under 17 Development Squad comprises those athletes considered prospects for selection to future world youth championships, world junior championships and the National Under 19 Talent Squad on the road to senior international representation.

Launched in 2006, the squad is chosen through consultation with Athletics Australia’s National Youth Event Coaches and in 2011 further highlights Athletics Australia’s collaborative approach to the Paralympic Preparation Program thanks to the inclusion of two athletes with a disability for the first time.

A proven breeding ground for future international representation, 24 of the 29 bound for the IAAF world youth championships this July are graduates of the 2010 program, with 15 of these athletes becoming the under 18 national champion  in 2011.
