Natalya Yulamanova ran 90 seconds faster than last year to defend her title. She broke away late from a pack that included Kenya's Caroline Kwambai and compatriot Alina Ivanova, a two-time champion in Prague.

Despite rising temperatures Kenneth Mungara finished in 2:11:06 to become the 10th Kenyan to win the men's title since the inaugural race in 1995. Kenyans also grabbed the other two spots on the podium. "The race was fine.

The weather wasn't a problem for me," said Mungara, although for others it was. Several runners had hoped to post Olympic qualifying times in the race, but none were successful. The Czech Republic's Pavel Novak dropped out at 24km.

Race favourite David Makori also dropped out. The first Czech, Robert Stefko, finished 15th with a time of 2:23:53.
